Habitats and Communities

DRIVING QUESTION:

How can we manage the earth in a God-honouring way?

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Barnston Island is a small island near to our school. The students will explore the possibility of developing the island and how that would affect water, land, plants, animals and humans. Presently the island holds about 150 inhabitants, with about 50 living on a reserve. We would bring experts, such as an environmental officer, to share their work and responsibility to enable the students to understand the complexity of the issue. We will then take a day trip to the island, examining possible changes such as a bridge instead of a ferry or eliminating local farms. Students will present the pros and cons of development thereby determining what is worth giving up to get.

CONNECTIONS AND PERSPECTIVES:

This project will encourage students to be ethically responsible citizens based on Christian principles.
