PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

In this project, students will be learning about computer network planning and reflect critically on how these skills can be used in developing countries to help communities thrive. After hearing from local networking professionals and doing exploration activities to become more familiar with network hardware and maintenance, students will hear from organizations that work in developing countries.  Based on the insights presented by the organizations, students will define a project scope around setting up a computer network for a community in need. They will be asked to consider the cultural and political factors that will affect their design. They will also be asked to reflect on the role that technology plays in lifting people out of poverty and whether it is a holistic solution to the problem of poverty. By the end of the unit, students will have a design presentation complete with a network diagram and a budget. These projects will be shared at a presentation event that is attended by the local experts and organizations that advised at the beginning of the project. At this event, students will receive feedback, celebrate their peer’s work, and be evaluated with a rubric.

CONNECTIONS AND PERSPECTIVES:

We live in an incredibly connected world, but there are billions of people that miss out on the benefits of this connection because they do not possess the proper equipment and infrastructure. In this project students will learn first hand how their technological skills can make an authentic difference in the world. We will explore how connecting people to the internet can help raise peoples’ socioeconomic status as well as connect a global family of Christ.
