PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Students will be examining financial literacy in this unit of Math.  They will be analyzing the cost of living in Vancouver, necessities and potential problems if you are working a minimum wage job. They will approach businesses in the area to inquire about requirements, income and raises. They will also visit a homeless shelter to feed and interact with the homeless.  The organizer of the shelter will talk with them about the struggles the homeless face financially, mentally, etc.  They will conclude the unit with creating a financial portfolio and one other product (eg. letter to City Hall, newspaper article, brochure, book on how to survive in Vancouver, or any other related ideas that the students come up with).

CONNECTIONS AND PERSPECTIVES:

The school motto for the year is “Care for everyone in our common home”.  This project will help students to have a better understanding of the problems the homeless, immigrants and people working a minimum wage face.
